Nominated Fellowships

Deadline
13.12.2030 (12.10pm Paris Time)
open

This scheme is designed to supplement the regular IASH Visiting Fellowship scheme by encouraging Schools within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to nominate scholars from outwith the University whose research will contribute directly to the research plans of the sponsoring unit and the current interests of the Institute.

The Fellowships will be for a maximum tenure of 3 months per person during a period of intensive collaboration with a number of staff. Each Fellow will have a private office in the Institute and will be expected to play a full part both in the activities of the Institute and of the sponsoring group of scholars. There is no stipend associated with these Fellowships, but travel funds can sometimes be made available if needed.

The sponsors from within Schools are responsible for submitting applications with a full proposal and CV of the applicant to the iashated [dot] ac [dot] uk (Director of the Institute).

Applications will be considered at any time during the academic year; acceptance by the Institute will be dependent on the appropriateness of the proposal and the availability of space during the relevant period.

The Institute is pleased to offer a range of postdoctoral and early-career Fellowships for recent graduates. Closing dates for application are late February and late April each year for visits in the following academic year.

Please enjoy this recording of our recent webinar for applicants wishing to apply for the next round, offering insights into our programmes as well as advice and tips: Webinar Recording

Our most popular scheme is the Postdoctoral Fellowship (up to 10 months), offering about 10 places per year to postdocs from around the world working in any discipline within the arts, humanities and social sciences. Our newest Fellowship programme, the Public Engagement Fellowship, is aimed at postdoctoral researchers seeking to develop their public engagement skills. The RACE.ED Stuart Hall Foundation Fellowship (3 to 6 months) is designed to support research that engages meaningfully with the works of Stuart Hall, building on the Institute Project on Decoloniality from 2021-24. Scholars working on gender and sexualities studies are encouraged to apply for the GENDER.ED Postdoctoral Fellowship (3 to 10 months).

Historians may be interested in the Daiches-Manning Memorial Fellowship in 18th-Century Scottish Studies (2 to 6 months). Scholars with an interest in digital arts, digital humanities, digital education, digital design and digital social sciences may wish to apply for the Digital Research Postdoctoral Fellowship (3 to 6 months). Researchers working in the field of contemporary Islam and Muslim culture can apply for the IASH-Alwaleed Postdoctoral Fellowship (3 to 10 months), while scholars in public theology can apply for the IASH-CTPI Duncan Forrester Fellowship (3 to 10 months).

Scholars wishing to examine specific special collections held at the University of Edinburgh can apply for the Heritage Collections Research Fellowship (3 to 6 months), while special collections in Scotland's national museums are the focus of the IASH-National Museums Scotland Fellowship (3 to 6 months). Those working in the social sciences, political science, sociology, international relations, social anthropology, sustainable development and associated fields may wish to apply for the IASH-SSPS Research Fellowship (2 to 4 months).

While most of our schemes are open to scholars from any country, some are targeted at scholars from specific countries; for Indian nationals, we offer the Charles Wallace India Trust Fellowship (3 months), as well as the Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust Fellowship (2 to 3 months) for Pakistani nationals, and US citizens or foreign nationals in the US or permanent residents affiliated with a US institution may apply for the American Philosophical Society Fellowship (2 to 4 months). We also offer the British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowship (12 months) for postdoctoral researchers based in any ODA-recipient country where the British Council operates. Lastly, early career researchers who already have their own funding but wish to be affiliated to the University of Edinburgh may apply for the Visiting Research Fellowship (minimum of 2 months), which provides an office at IASH but is not accompanied by a bursary.

Visiting Groups

Deadline
29.10.2026 (11.59pm Paris Time)
open
Visiting Groups at ZIF

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) is Bielefeld University’s Institute for Advanced Study. It offers opportunities—with respect to time, space, and funding—for outstanding interdisciplinary reearch. ZiF is open to scholarly applicants from all disciplines post-PhD, based at a university/research institute in Germany or abroad. Applicants may propose a research project to be conucted with a curated group of (preferably) international colleagues. In support of the work of groups on-site in Bielefeld, ZiF allocates financial resources and pro- vides infrastructure as well as organisational assistance. If an application is successful, ZiF then hosts these groups on its campus, offering ideal working conditions.

 Visiting Groups can, for example, explore new research topics and partnerships, finalise inter-disciplinary publications or conduct small research projects during their stay at ZiF. ZiF cannot support projects that require essential fieldwork, nor can it provide laboratory facilities.

WHAT ZIF OFFERS

  • Duration: one stay at ZiF; lasting a minimum of one to a maximum of three months
  • Funding Amount: up to EUR 50,000 to cover the costs for travel and accommodation, workshops and/or conferences on-site; please note: personnel expenses (buy-outs) cannot be covered, but an allowance of EUR 50 per day will be paid as a compensation for any additional costs
  • Timing: Projects can commence approximately 12 months after the deadline. Dates for a stay at ZiF will be finalized once a grant was made, depending on availability.

Group Requirements

  • Size: The minimum number of participants required for a group is three.
  • Composition: Different disciplines must be involved; international participation is strongly encouraged. Decisions to not include international fellows must be well justified.
  • We expect convenors and the majority of a group to be present at ZiF for their collaboration phase. Additional remote participants may be involved.
  • The necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration must originate from the research at hand and must be explained in the proposal. The mere involvement of different disciplines does not suffice to meet this criterion.
  • The stage of preparation of the proposed project should clearly show its feasibility within the timeframe suggested.
  • A gender balance appropriate to the disciplines involved is expected.

Important Selection Criteria

  • Interdisciplinarity
  • Academic quality
  • Originality on an international level

Selection Process and Timing

Proposals will be selected competitively. Complete submissions will be reviewed externally. Decisions will be made approximately 6 months after the deadline.

CHECKLIST FOR APPLICATIONS

Applications must be submitted by a team of two to four persons who also act as convenors of the group they propose. All convenors must have completed a doctorate and must be affiliated with a research institute/university. One of them acts as the main contact person.

closed

IAS hosts both Research Fellows and Policy Fellows. To achieve its mission, IAS offers all fellows an inspiring environment and various kinds of support to work on an interdisciplinary challenge together with other members of the IAS community. Here you can find information about who those fellowships are for and how to apply to join our collaborative community!

Learn more about previous fellows in their fellowship videoRead about our fellows and their work and experience at IAS

Who can apply?

UvA researchers or researchers from another university at any career stage can apply for a research fellowship.

We explicitly welcome joint applications from small teams of researchers and are mindful of the importance of (gender) diversity within IAS. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for everyone.

Requirements:

  • PhD degree;
  • applicants currently employed by other institutions than UvA need a committed co-applicant within the UvA who wants to structurally collaborate with the fellow.  Co-applicants are UvA employees at (Assitant/Associate) Professor level;
  • an employment contract at an university or research institute for the entire duration of the research fellowship;
  • curiosity and a collaborative mindset.
What we offer

Research fellowships typically have a duration of 2-5 months, depending on availability as well as possible visa limitations, with the possibility of extension.

For research fellows employed by UvA, time at IAS is organised as an in-kind arrangement with their department. This can take the form of spending sabbatical time at IAS or other arrangements (e.g. using a research grant).

Research fellows employed by other institutions (non-UvA fellows) enjoy guest status; they are not employed by the IAS.

For non-UvA fellows who relocate to Amsterdam for the duration of the research fellowship, IAS provides a needs-based compensation for your expenses (travel, accommodation, etc). They are responsible for paying tax to the Tax and Customs Administration of the Netherlands (Belastingdienst) or to the tax authorities of the country in which they are liable to pay taxes.

All research fellows will get access to:

  • a regular working space at IAS;
  • a vibrant community with many opportunities to develop novel research projects and methodologies, and to establish partnerships and networks;
  • participation in community lunches and events
  • organisational support to (co)organize and publicize activities at IAS (such as workshops, think tanks, seminars);
  • small amount of seed funding to support their project (e.g. for student assistance, inviting international guests, publication support).
Process and Timelines

Research fellowship applications are assessed by the IAS Board of Associates, who advises the IAS Director. While we welcome applications at any moment throughout the year, ideal starting dates for research fellowships at IAS are February and September. Please note, that IAS is not able to host international fellows during the summer break. Kindly consider this in your planning and timeline.

Our Board of Associates meets three times a year to assess applications: 19 February, 28 May and 22 October 2026. To ensure sufficient time for evaluation, we require that applications be submitted at least 10 working days before the meeting.

To apply, please send an email to iasatuva [dot] nl (ias[at]uva[dot]nl) and include:

  1. the application form;
  2. CV;
  3. a letter of support from your employer/supervisor confirming your availability during the fellowship period.

Self-funded Residential Fellowships

Deadline
13.05.2026 (12.32pm Paris Time)
closed

The Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is dedicated to research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The institute offers time and space for supporting innovative academic research of top international quality. All MIASA fellowships are residential and mainly focus on onsite reflection, discussion and writing. In addition, MIASA facilitates networking and collaboration amongst leading researchers from Germany, Ghana, other parts of Africa and Europe and elsewhere in the world. The institute is located on the beautiful campus of the University of Ghana (UG) at Legon (Accra), and has been implemented in collaboration with the University of Freiburg, the Goethe University of Frankfurt, the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and the German Historical Institute Paris (GHIP). It is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) with co-funding from the University of Ghana.

MIASA now offers self-funded residential fellowships (between 3 and 6 months) for researchers with either external funding or on paid leave from their home institutions (e.g. sabbatical). This opportunity is open to scholars (both on junior and senior levels) who have been awarded their doctoral degree at least three months before the start of the fellowship. Starting dates for these types of fellowships are handled flexibly but may depend on office space availability. The earliest starting date is 1 September 2026.

The selection is made by MIASA’s distinguished international Academic Advisory Board. Applications can be submitted at any time but at least 4 months prior to the intended start of the fellowship.

The successful applicants become MIASA fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the requested period. MIASA provides office space and organizational assistance for self-funded fellows during their stay. Applicants for self-funded fellowships can apply for an accommodation allowance of up to 1500€/month and for the reimbursement of travel costs at the beginning and the end of the fellowship. Please note that funding for this is limited and not guaranteed. Accommodation allowances and travel costs are funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space via the University of Freiburg.

MIASA supports academic exchange across existing boundaries: between disciplines, between different cultures and countries, between established and early-career researchers. Furthermore, MIASA engages in activities opening the research community to society, politics, and the arts. Self-funded fellows are part of this community, and benefit from the lively research environment of the University of Ghana. Applications for self-funded fellowships should indicate how the research project contributes to the activities at MIASA and, more broadly, to the academic life on Legon campus.

The Institute provides its fellows with office space on the University of Ghana – Legon campus. A full-time presence of fellows at MIASA for the entire fellowship period is required.
