Institute for Advanced Research (IAR)

In recognizing the value of creative research in providing intellectual assets for the future, Nagoya University established the Institute for Advanced Research (Nagoya IAR) in 2002, as a “premier intellectual community” within the University. IAR’s founding director is Dr. Ryoji Noyori, the 2001 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. IAR is the first UBIAS in Japan that intensively promotes highly creative research in all academic disciplines. To fulfill its mission of promoting the top-caliber academic research at Nagoya University, IAR has three principal functions: (i) As an academy within the University, IAR communicates excellence in research to members of the University; (ii) By providing substantial support to research of international excellence, IAR contributes to the improvement of quality of research across the University; (iii) By actively supporting the independence of outstanding young researchers, IAR nurtures leaders of the next generation for the University. In an effort to communicate and highlight research of international excellence, IAR hosts Nagoya University Lectures, IAR Lectures, IAR Seminars, and a Freshmen Lecture Series. IAR promotes the creation of internationally recognized research of the highest caliber, conducted by the distinguished IAR faculty members (IAR projects). IAR also supports outstanding young researchers in the early stages of their career.
