Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS)

The Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CALAS) has its headquarters at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. It is based on a network of four Latin American Universities (alongside Guadalajara, the University of Costa Rica, FLACSO Ecuador, and Universidad Nacional San Martín in Argentina) and four German Universities (Bielefeld, Kassel, Hannover, and Jena). CALAS promotes research of interest in the social sciences and humanities, with a focus on Latin America, applying historical, scientific, and systematic approaches and employing transdisciplinary and transregional dialogue. Through this cross-pollination of ideas, methods and its unique polycentric structure, CALAS aims to create a space for the development of a new generation of transregional and dialogue-oriented research on an international level.
