Call for proposals

The Institute for Advanced Study of Technische Universität München (TUM-IAS) is the centerpiece of TUM’s institutional strategy to promote top-level research in the so-called Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments. TUM-IAS awards Fellowships to distinguished researchers and gives them the necessary time and financial support to explore new venues, to develop novel research areas and to establish intensive international collaborations. To attract scholarly talent from around the globe TUM-IAS invites applications for the prestigious

a) Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship
Target Group: Up to four Hans Fischer Senior Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding international scientists who intend to explore innovative, high-risk topics in their scientific research areas together with a TUM Research Group. Applications are invited in all areas of the TUM research portfolio.

Objective: The Fellowships last three years with the expectation that the Fellow will spent a total of at least nine months at TUM. In this way, TUM-IAS intends to further a lasting and productive connection on an international level.

Funding: Hans Fischer Senior Fellows receive an award of €60,000 plus max. €100,000 for travel, housing and research related costs, and support for one doctoral candidate at TUM.

Conditions: Hans Fischer Senior Fellows have to fulfill the mobility requirements of the Marie Curie COFUND program within EU's 7th Framework Program which co-funds the Fellowship, i.e., no more than 12 months residence and/or employment in Germany in the three years preceding the publication date of the respective call.

b) Hans Fischer Junior Fellowship
Target Group: Up to two Hans Fischer Junior Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding young international scientists who intend to explore innovative, high-risk topics in their scientific research areas together with a TUM Research Group. Applications are invited in all areas of the TUM research portfolio.

Objective: The Fellowships last three years with the expectation that the Fellow will spent a total of at least nine months at TUM. In this way, TUM-IAS intends to further a lasting and productive connection on an international level.

Funding: Hans Fischer Junior Fellows receive an award of €30,000 plus max. €80,000 for travel, housing and research related costs, as well as support for one doctoral candidate at TUM.

Conditions: Hans Fischer Junior Fellows have to fulfill the mobility requirements of the Marie Curie COFUND program within EU's 7th Framework Program which co-funds the Fellowship, i.e., no more than 12 months residence and/or employment in Germany in the three years preceding the publication date of the respective call. They also have to provide evidence of employment at their home institute for the duration of the Fellowship.

Application Guidelines for TUM-IAS Hans Fischer Senior and Junior Fellowships:
The nominee and the planned TUM-IAS Host should submit a joint application including the following documents:
(1) nomination letter including the facilities provided for the Fellow by the TUM Host institute,
(2) CV including a list of major publications,
(3) statement of purpose jointly signed by the candidate and the hosting professor, describing how the Fellowship would contribute to the innovation of the scientific or technological environment at TUM, the specific goals to be achieved, a budget plan and a time plan regarding the candidate’s projected periods of stay at TUM,
(4) letter of nomination from the Dean of the hosting faculty or another member of the TUM Extended Board of Management (EHP) or TUM-IAS Board of Trustees.
