Call for Applications: Maurice Halbwachs Summer Institute: Economy between Cultural Theory and Cultural History

At the center of this year’s Maurice Halbwachs Summer Institute is an inquiry into the power of economic thought and the symbolic representations of economic transactions since the Renaissance.
How effective and suitable are the tools of cultural analysis in dissecting the economy? This is one of the central questions literature scholar Joseph Vogl (Humboldt University, Berlin) will address in his key-note lecture, a topic which will be discussed both with the younger participants of the summer institute and with established historians and social scientists who will also be invited to give their input.
The Maurice Halbwachs Summer Institute is open to doctoral students and postdocs in the Humanities and Social Sciences from Germany as well as abroad. An interest in interdisciplinary work is expected to create an atmosphere of productive intellectual exchange. Applicants with research topics resonating with the theme will profit most from participation.
For applicants from outside Göttingen with well documented need, it may be possible to offer financial support.
German and English are the languages of discussion at this year’s Summer Institute. The main lecture will be given in German; in the working groups with the invited seniors as well as with fellows of the Lichtenberg-Kolleg and the four organizers will be handled as fits the composition of groups.
Tuition: 100 €
The Summer Institute is supported by third-party funding. The program includes a reader, a welcome and a farewell dinner, lunches, as well as a thematically dovetailing excursion in the environs for all participants.
